On a busy street corner in Lusaka, John approached a group of four young men. He began to speak with them, starting with small talk and moved into sharing the gospel. Three of the men were happy to talk to John, sharing their thoughts and asking John questions. But one seemed disinterested, barely looking at him as he shared the gospel.
Suddenly, on the other side of the road, a fight broke out and the three men left to watch what was happening. But the fourth stayed back. His name was Fenway. With his friends gone, he asked John to sit next to him on the rocky ground.
John learned that Fenway used to attend church. Every week he went and heard about a God who wouldn’t accept him because of how many bad things he had done in his life. He wasn’t interested in God after that. But John told him about the God he knows, and the story of the prisoners on the cross with Jesus. And one of those prisoners, dying for his crimes, went to heaven because he accepted Jesus and His sacrifice.
As the two looked through the Hope magazine, Fenway began to cry. This is what he needed. This is what he had been hoping for. Through his tears, Fenway prayed for salvation and recommitted to attending the church in his neighbourhood with a new heart.
