Touching Syria for Christ—in Russia
By Craig Hussey
Their questions were many, deep and challenging. However, little by little, I saw their hearts begin to soften. The Holy Spirit was doing the work that only He can do!
“Lord, why am I here today?” I mused, hurrying to catch up with our translators and team members who had just given Russian Hope magazines and Gospels of John to three young men. The local pastors had just dropped us off at the city park in the city of Nalchik, Russia. It was unseasonably warm and my feet were soggy from the wet and mud.
Speaking in English, a rarity on this trip, Victor, Aslan and Nicolai told us they were from a war-torn city in Syria, and were in Nalchik to study at a Muslim technical university. Muslim universities and colleges are used extensively in this part of the world to convert young men and women to Islam.
I told them we were from Canada, and had come to share about Jesus and how much He loved them. When I asked if they knew who Jesus was, two said yes, one said no. I began to share the gospel with them. Their questions were many, deep and challenging. However, little by little, I saw their hearts begin to soften. The Holy Spirit was doing the work that only He can do!
After an extended conversation I asked if I could lead them in a prayer to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, explaining to them that they were committing their lives to Him forever. All three said, “Yes!”
What a moment to see Victor, Aslan and Nicolai receive Jesus as the Lord of their life. At the end of the prayer I reached out my hand to shake Nicolai’s. He ignored my hand and embraced me instead, wiping tears away from under his ball cap—and repeatedly saying, “Thank you, thank you, thank you!”
As we parted ways with those three young Syrians, the Lord reminded me, “That’s why you are here today.”
Please pray for those young men as they dig into the copies of God’s Word now in their hands and grow in their newfound faith—especially as they go home one day to Syria.
There are many more just like Victor, Aslan and Nicolai in this region of the world. Please pray for them all, and that our ministry will be enabled to place the Word of God in their hands and the message of Jesus’ love in their hearts!
