Would You Dare to Be Uncomfortable?

…to interrupt your routine because a voice inside says: “Get up, go to that place… and talk to that person”? You don’t know the place. You’ve never seen that person—and it makes no sense. Everything in you says: “This is crazy!” But deep down, you know it’sGod asking you to do something specific. Would you take that step?

That’s what happened to Jordan, ShareWord Global’s Ministry Manager for Latin America while in Chincha Alta, Peru, with his Canadian teammate Sam, their Peruvian translator Nathaly, and two young sons of a local pastor. They were all part of a ShareWord GO Team, ready to share the gospel with the Peruvian people.

Chincha Alta is a lively city on Peru’s coast—full of colour, busy markets, fresh fruit smells, and the noise of vendors calling out to people. Life moves fast here. Stopping someone is not easy.

And it was that morning where Jordan saw two women, Jaqueline and Patricia, leaving the market with grocery bags and a little girl. As he saw them, an internal dialogue started to play in his mind: "They probably need the gospel… but they won’t want to hear it. They’re in a hurry to get home."

His first instinct was not to bother them. But his teammate, Sam, was bolder. He walked right up to them and asked if they could talk about Jesus. To Jordan’s surprise, their eyes lit up, nodding yes.

The group stepped off to the side of the sidewalk and started talking. Jordan and Sam soon learned their names, and that Jaqueline and Patricia were Catholic, loved Jesus, but weren’t living their faith. While they talked, two boys playing soccer nearby—Liam and Francisco—came closer, curious about what was being said, yet shy. Jordan invited them to join and restarted the gospel message so they could hear it too. As the words of hope flowed like sweet nectar, they began to draw others in.

Then, as if by divine appointment, Ashley appeared.

She had been walking alone when something in the conversation caught her attention. Drawn in, she paused—curious and longing for what she heard. Deep inside, Ashley had been carrying the weight of pain and rejection and desperately wanted to find a community of people she could call friends and family in faith, yet her relationship with Jesus was very weak—almost nonexistent at that moment. When Jordan invited her to join, she gladly stepped closer, eager to listen and discover the hope her heart had been searching for.

The scene looked like bees attracted to a flower, bringing life to a garden. One stepped closer, then another, and soon there was a flourishing of passionate hearts gathered around the Word being shared. In minutes, five people were listening to the Good News. All because someone decided to be uncomfortable and take the first step.

These five lives couldn’t be more dissimilar—different ages, different backgrounds, different struggles:

Jaqueline and Patricia were searching for hope.

Ashley longed for love and community.

The boys wanted peace and security.

Yet all of them were touched by the same message.

What united these five very different lives was a deep need for hope—and that hope was about to be clearly explained. Jordan opened a Hope magazine and began sharing the gospel, pointing to Psalm 23 and John 3:16. He spoke of Jesus as the Good Shepherd who cares for us and reminded them that salvation is a gift, not something we earn. As the words sank in, the tension and hurt in their hearts began to soften.

When the invitation came to receive Christ, all five responded with joy. They prayed the prayer printed in the back of the magazine, their voices joining together in a heartfelt “amen.”

The moment was so moving that Sam suggested they form a circle. Hand in hand, with Nathaly translating, Sam prayed one final blessing over the group. It was a powerful picture—strangers now united as family in Christ. When the prayer ended, hugs were exchanged, smiles broke out, and there was a sense of celebration on that busy sidewalk. Jordan encouraged them to connect with the local church, reminding them that this was just the beginning of a new journey of faith.

That day in Peru reminds us of something powerful: the gospel moves when hearts are willing to step out of comfort. It started with one simple choice—and it can start with yours too.

Today, you and I have the same chance. To be uncomfortable.

When you sit next to someone on the subway.

When the barista hands you your morning coffee.

When you talk to your child’s teacher.

When you wait in line at the grocery store or walk in the park.

In those moments, the Spirit may be whispering to you: “Tell them about Jesus.”

Just a little obedience… and heaven opens.
