God’s in the Game
Soccer. It’s called “the beautiful game,” a phrase famously spoken by a legendary Brazilian soccer player.
But on this particular day in Brazil, the beauty of the game took on a whole new meaning.
On a ShareWord Global GO Trip to Word of Life camp in Pará, Brazil, team leader Evan and his translator João met with a group of boys aged 10–11 following a gospel presentation during one of the camp sessions. The message shared who Jesus is, why He came, and the hope found in salvation through Him. Evan and João came prepared with discussion questions for their small group time that would follow—but as the conversation began, it became clear that something deeper was needed. The boys still didn’t truly understand the gospel.
Evan and João paused. Instead of sticking to their script, they chose to speak the boys’ language—soccer.
They explained that just as the boys love the game—spending hours playing, watching, and talking about it—loving God means spending time with Him, too. Talking to Him. Sharing Him with others. Suddenly, the gospel wasn’t abstract. It was real. It made sense.
You could see it in their eyes—something was clicking.
As the conversation deepened, the boys leaned in, asking thoughtful questions. At the end, Evan and João invited them to respond. They led a simple prayer of repentance and commitment to Jesus like this:
“Lord, we are sinners in deep need of Your mercy and love. Jesus, will you enter our lives as we commit to living our lives for you.”
All the boys repeated the words and raised their hands. While only God knows the true posture of their hearts, the leaders were faithful to share the message of Jesus. They trust that seeds were planted that day—seeds that, in God’s perfect timing, will grow into something beautiful.
Before they left, each boy received a Faísca (Spark) magazine—filled with Scripture and photos relevant to their lives in Brazil. Seeds were planted. Hearts were stirred. And all because someone took the time to speak their “language.”
