The Quiet Craving

You know what hunger feels like—a rumble in your stomach, a craving you can’t ignore. But some hunger runs deeper. It doesn’t shout. It whispers inside your soul. It’s quiet and hidden—a deep longing for something no meal could ever satisfy.

But there is One who fills that emptiness the moment you ask: “Jesus replied, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.’” (John 6:35)

That timeless promise came alive one September day on a ShareWord Global GO Trip—a journey where believers from around the world come together to share the gospel.

It was the last day of the team’s outreach in Peru, and they had traveled to one of the most physically poor areas in the region—a place some call a “shanty town.” Windy, dusty roads led to a small school where children gathered for a special program hosted by a local church partner and ShareWord Global. The event was designed to help the kids understand who Jesus is and how much He loves them. Jordan—a ministry leader with ShareWord Global—stood among them, flipping through a Chispa(Spark) magazine, filled with gospel truths and illustrations that explain the gospel in a way children can grasp.

The kids were curious—some shy, some distracted, as they often are in any culture. But as Jordan continued teaching, Gary—a GO Team member—stood nearby, watching the moment unfold until, suddenly, he felt a tap on his shoulder.

A family stood there: a father, mother, and two daughters. They had been quietly watching Jordan share the gospel. And now, they were reaching out to Gary directly. They didn’t ask for food or money. They didn’t ask any questions. All they wanted was to simply know Jesus and be prayed for.

Gary’s eyes widened as a smile spread across his face.

Here he was, far from his home in England, on a trip where he had no idea what to expect—yet here was the power of God at work. No big sermon. No convincing. No chasing people to have a conversation. Just a simple, sincere request that came to him. Gary could tell they had a hunger for Jesus, and he took this opportunity to share the gospel with them, explaining who Jesus is, what it means to follow Him, and how to begin that journey. He then led them in the prayer they had asked his help for—a prayer that would change their lives forever. All four bowed their heads and invited Jesus to be Lord of their lives.

“They came to us,” Gary said later, his voice still full of wonder. “It wasn’t us going to them. It felt like they saw an opportunity— ‘...the Brits are in town, or the Canadians are in town and... we’ve got a chance here.’”

Before they left, Gary placed a copy of the Esperanza (Hope) magazine in their hands—a Scripture resource filled with encouraging Psalms, the Gospel of John, and beautiful images that reflect the Peruvian culture. Gary encouraged them to take the next step—connect with a church, grow in their new faith, and find a community where they could open their hearts fully to the Lord.

They walked away with more than a magazine. They walked away with hope.

That day, they were ready. They were hungry. And because of your support, they were filled.
