What's Behind the Name?

Florence probably didn't know what her name meant to others—"flourishing," "prosperous"—words that can feel out of place in Nateete, a struggling neighbourhood on the Southern edge of Kampala, Uganda.

In this place, flourishing is hard. The ground floods when it rains, houses crack and leak, and hope seems to wash away with every storm.

But Florence was rooted in something deeper. Her faith, nourished by God's Word, had made her like a strong tree—ready to stretch out her branches toward anyone in need of shelter.

She met Agnes during a local outreach organized by her church, Siloam Miracle Ministries International. Florence had been prepared through her church's work with ShareWord Global. She came ready, not only to speak, but more importantly to listen, to sit, and to extend the hope she carried through the message of God's Word.

Agnes was sitting quietly, holding a baby in her arms, with three more children nearby. Her eyes were full of questions.

Three years earlier, her husband had gone to the garden to find food for the family.

But he never came back.

A tragic accident took his life. Before that, Agnes had already lost both of her parents in another accident.

And now, she lives alone with her children in a small, cracked room that floods every time it rains. She had no one to lean on—emotionally or physically. No support. No answers—only one question: “Why did this happen to me?”

Florence sat down beside her. She handed Agnes a Hope magazine and began to speak about something she knew well: Psalm 23. Not as a quote, but as a truth she had experienced herself. “Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me...” (Psalm 23:4).

The air filled with the life-giving message of God's Word. Verses like, “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need,” (Psalm 23:1) felt like water on dry ground. And Agnes began to cry—not from weakness, but because these words touched her heart.

Florence's faith was bearing fruit. Like a tree planted along a riverbank, her faith became shade for someone who had been standing too long under the burning sun and cold rains of grief and physical poverty.

She gently asked Agnes if she wanted to give her life to Christ. And through tears, Agnes said yes.

That moment wasn't just a prayer. It was the beginning of something new. In the middle of the mud and brokenness, a seed had found good soil. Florence promised to walk with her—to bring her to church, introduce her to the pastor, and help her grow in her new faith.

This is what the ministry is about. It grows people. It equips believers like Florence to be trees that stretch out their branches—offering shade, fruit, and life in Christ to others. And it's what your giving is doing all around the world, today.

Because when someone flourishes in God's Word, others find comfort, direction, and hope through them.

“They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.” Psalm 1:3
