Wrestling with the why
In a village, just outside Lilongwe, Malawi, 18-year-old Ernest sat quietly inside a shop. He wore a vacant expression on his face and stared into the distance, unable to focus on the things happening around him.
Once an active member of his church, Ernest had slowly pulled away. For him, unanswered prayers and ongoing hardship left him feeling like God had forgotten him.
Though he had grown up attending the Malawi Assemblies of God Church, Ernest no longer saw the point.
While staring off into the distance, waiting for the time to pass, Ernest was met by Mrs. Beatrice. She was out sharing the gospel as part of an Ignite evangelism training event and was moved when she saw Ernest. She struck up a conversation with him and could immediately sense the heaviness he carried.
As they spoke, Ernest shared that life had grown difficult. His family was facing financial struggles, and it left him questioning everything. “If God really hears me,” he said, “why hasn’t anything changed?” To him, God’s blessings were tied to material things—and when those didn’t come, his faith began to slip away.
Beatrice listened patiently. She could tell Ernest knew the church well, but something in him had lost connection with God’s heart. His disappointment had grown into discouragement. He couldn’t see beyond the things he felt were missing in his life.
Gently, Beatrice opened the Bible and shared Ecclesiastes 3:11: “Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time...” She reminded Ernest that God’s blessings aren’t only measured by wealth, but also by things like health, love, and peace. “God is never late,” she told him. “He always does things right on time.”
In that quiet moment, something shifted. Ernest nodded, and his posture softened. Hope stirred in his heart—not because his situation had changed, but because he saw it differently. That day, Ernest recommitted his life to Christ. He promised to return to church, not chasing material blessings, but pursuing a deeper relationship with God—one rooted in trust, not timelines.
Please pray for Ernest as he walks forward in faith, trusting God not just for provision, but for the peace that comes from knowing Him fully.
